We Asked ... You Answered

Last month, we asked “Do you think there is enough news coverage about the Global War on Terrorism?”

The majority of respondents—almost 82 percent—believe the media is not doing an adequate job in fully covering the Global War on Terrorism. Many believe coverage that exists focuses on the negative aspects of war, such as death tolls, insurgent attacks and improper actions taken by our troops. They suggest coverage should provide a broader scope, showcasing also the good our troops do.

Others believe the War on Terrorism has received too much coverage. Some even say more coverage leads to a more complacent, less interested nation.

  • “The news media is more concerned about the negative aspects of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Anything that casts the current Administration in a bad light makes the headlines, while more positive stories are buried, if covered at all.”
  • “The media only talks about the bad things that happen; they don't talk about the good that happens. They don't compare numbers, such as more people were killed in Chicago having to do with crime than soldiers in OIF.”
  • “We need not only news coverage, but news that hasn't been manipulated and sugar-coated.”
  • “What coverage [that does exist] reports on what the enemy is doing or how our troops are victims or murderers.”
  • “I am certain that there are projects and actions taken by our servicemen and women that never get the focus of the media. I wish we would see more of this reported in the news.”
  • “Not enough facts are given on the global war and the results. Little or no information is given on all the other successes our troops have had with the good things they do.”
  • “Public complacency is our big problem. Terrorism is an ongoing problem with no known solution at this time. The public must continually be made aware at all times.”
  • “I believe there is adequate coverage about the war on terrorism, but some of it is misspoken. President Bush has been right in fighting terrorism, and his approach has paid off well. But our resources have been drained and we need to rethink how we're going to continue fighting this menace to world peace which will continue for many years to come—and probably forever.”
  • “I believe that the media should be limited on what they can show and report. There is way too much vital information useful to the terrorist in plotting their next move. The embedded media is detrimental to our troop safety and the security of our operations. The news reported on "the Global War on Terrorism" or any military action should be reported after being scrutinized very closely by military officials to verify that no specific location or information is revealed.”
  • “Too much coverage and people will stop paying attention. They will just stop listening.”
