We Asked ... You Answered Overwhelming disapproval with lack of veteran preference in hiring
Last month, we asked “Do you think employers give enough preference to veterans and troops when hiring?”
Close to 250 individuals responded. Almost 90 percent believe veterans are not given enough preference during the hiring procedure.
Here are several of the comments we received regarding the question:
- “I believe that veterans should have not only first choice at their previous job, but first choice at any job they are otherwise capable of filling.”
- “I don't believe my husband's current employer cares all that much about any veterans or reservists employed there. They sure didn't show any concern when he was activated and deployed.”
- “Too many people are willing to thank you for your service but are not willing to reach out for veteran preference in hiring!”
-
“No. I do not think employers give preference to veterans when making hiring decisions. In fact, I believe that just the opposite occurs. I know that in times past whenever I included my military service on my resume, I was not even considered for employment. I had to omit my military service in order to find a position.” -
“I feel that they do show preference if in fact they are veterans themselves. Otherwise, I feel that they hire vets because of government rules or for public attention during certain times.” -
“It seems most employers do not grasp the dedication and leadership skills veterans bring to the table. Furthermore, combat vets bring a level of poise the private sector should not only desire but actively recruit through their respective HR sections. However, it's not just the private sector that is foolishly squandering the talent pool. Outside DoD, the federal government just does not hire veterans.”
The VFW appreciates your feedback! Please weigh in on this month's question and share how you feel about important veterans' issues. |
