'Because They Have Been There, Too...'

 Joshua Boyce

When Joshua Boyce, Airman 1st Class, Air Force Security Forces, sat down in the Internet Cafe in Iraq, he could hardly wait to hear familiar voices from home. As he dialed his phone, he soon learned that every minute of his call would be free, thanks to VFW “Free Call Days.”

“It’s comforting to know people are willing to donate to VFW,” said Boyce. “Especially donations that allow troops the opportunity to make a free call.”

Originally from Bellevue, Wash., Boyce and the 586th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron enforced base security in Camp Bucca, Iraq, for six months. Boyce, along with many other military members, appreciate time to connect with loved ones at home.

“I very much enjoyed talking with my father. He is a very wise man,” he added, “because of the free call, we had a lighthearted conversation about the weather, my mother and the rest of our family.”

Upon his return from Iraq, Boyce plans to spend his time off continuing his schooling and training. He is thankful for the support that he and other service members receive from VFW.

“I’m very happy with VFW programs because I know that veterans supporting veterans is the way to go,” Boyce explained.

“It’s one thing to get a care package from someone who has no idea what you are going through. But it’s entirely different knowing that someone who has been where you are at some point in history has not forgotten the sacrifice and continues to donate to freedom.”
