Calls Home Keep Love Going

Silvia Love bought a phone card before her deployment, but soon found that her calling minutes lasted about as long as a gallon of gas in an SUV.

“I bought a phone card in New York before we flew over the big pond,” she explains. “I didn’t realize how quickly the minutes are eaten up.

“I called my husband from Kuwait and by the time I got to Iraq, I ran out of minutes.”

Luckily for Love, VFW Operation Uplink was able to provide her with more phone cards, helping her to talk to her husband and two children.

“They didn’t really expect the call,” she says. “They were overjoyed to hear my voice. It was very emotional, but exciting for me to talk to them and feel their support over the phone.”

Prior to her deployment, Love didn’t know of VFW Operation Uplink because she was focused on her deployment.

“To get a phone card was such a relief,” she says. “It really meant a lot to me and my family to be able to talk to each other. Those responsible for making it happen should know that their efforts are very much appreciated.”

For Love, the fact that the VFW is behind the program makes the phone card especially sentimental.

“To have someone who doesn’t even know you do something so kind is reassuring,” she explains. “It is reassuring that what we are doing means something to our veterans and our nation.

“I can’t tell you how wonderful and honored we feel to be supported by those who walked in our shoes before us,” says Love. “It’s moving to know that veterans stand by us in our time.”
