A Soldier’s ‘Thanks’ for VFW Free Call Days

 Crystal Lauver

Crystal Lauver, Commander of the 955th Engineer Company, recently returned from a deployment to Iraq, where calling home wasn’t always easy.

But, thanks to VFW Operation Uplink™ Free Call Days, Lauver and her soldiers were able to call home free of charge, once a month, at Internet cafes throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pre-paid phone cards were also useful when calls needed to be placed in-between Free Call Days.

“While deployed, we sometimes received Red Cross messages and needed to get soldiers in contact with their family immediately. Through pre-paid phone cards, VFW Operation Uplink provided that vital link back to the states for free, connecting those who serve with those who care,” said Lauver.

Lauver said the soldiers are more than appreciative of the Free Call Days. They can call home and talk for as long as they want. Lauver, who as a civilian works at the VFW National Headquarters as an Assistant Director in the National Military Services Department, says this wouldn’t be possible without individual and corporate sponsors.

“Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible,” said Lauver.
