After 14 long months in Iraq, ecstatic family members and friends welcomed home the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion. VFW honored the Rock of the Marne, Third Infantry Division, by sponsoring a picnic near Savannah, Ga.
The VFW Department of Georgia, along with the VFW Military Assistance Program, sponsored the day’s activities and provided food and supplies.
“There is no better time to celebrate our servicemembers than when they arrive home,” explained Al Spears, Adjutant/Quartermaster, VFW Department of Georgia. “The children were giddy with excitement, and the feeling was contagious.”
More than 100 military members and loved ones came together to enjoy the homecoming barbeque. Light-hearted children played games. Jubilant families chatted and sang along to live music, and others just soaked up the sun.
In addition to conversation and relaxation, many left the event smarter about veterans’ benefits. A VFW service officer was on hand to distribute information about VA benefits and advice on how to obtain them.
“We are so proud to honor the contributions of our troops,” Spears continued. “They really enjoyed themselves. We could see the smiles in their eyes.” |
