Sisters Samantha, 14, and Jessica, 10, tragically lost their father four years ago. Home from duty, he was involved in a traffic accident.
Now living with their grandmother, the girls searched for something with which they could remember their dad.
VFW Post 56, Leavenworth, Kan., was more than eager to assist the girls.
“We understood how special a moment like this would be. We wanted to help however we could,” said Lynn Rolf, Sr. Vice Commander, Post 56.
The Post organized a memorial ceremony for the girls and their father. They knew the ceremony would honor his memory, but the members wanted to leave something with the girls, too.
With everyone pitching in, the Post purchased two flags in shadowboxes for the sisters, as well as acquired the medals and patches their father had earned.
Post 56 arranged to hold the ceremony at VFW Post 2561 in Sedalia, Mo. On the big day, Rolf presented these gifts to their honorary guests.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in all of the VFW. While I read the VFW memorial commendation, [Jessica] grabbed me, and it hit me really hard. I challenged the girls to be the best daughters they could be, and take pride in their father’s service,” said Rolf.
With a full Color Guard and Honors Team in attendance, the event was a fitting tribute to their father, and one the girls will never forget. |
