Of the nearly two million female veterans in America, more than 75,000 of them currently live in the state of Georgia — a statistic that resonated with Tommy Clack, life member of VFW Post 5290 and “Salute to America’s Women Veterans” organizer.

Celebrating its sixth year, the annual Independence Day, “Fabulous 4th Festival” in Conyers, Ga., added a little something different to its agenda this time around. More than 25,000 attendees looked on as the 150 female veterans in attendance were honored with a proclamation “commending America’s women veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices,” during the “Salute to America’s Women Veterans” ceremony.

While planning for the event, Clack turned to the VFW Military Assistance Program (MAP) for assistance with funding the project. Without hesitation, VFW’s National Military Services department approved his request, granting the funds necessary to cover the cost of printing and distributing the proclamations.

“Georgia military bases, VA facilities and State Veterans’ Organizations’ headquarters will be presenting the proclamations over the next few months. Plus, another 70 women veterans have come by my office to obtain theirs,” said Clack. “This was a great team project.”
