This past Memorial Day, VFW and Ladies Auxiliary VFW members turned out in full force to honor America’s fallen heroes. At ceremonies, parades and other tributes held across the nation, VFW led communities in remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day.
“It’s our solemn duty to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation,” said Donald Marshall, past state commander, VFW Department of New Jersey.
Marshall’s Post, 9503 in Bayville, N.J., planned and participated in a full weekend of activities, including an event at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery that was also attended by the Governor of New Jersey, Jon Corzine.
Other tributes included placing a wreath in the Barnegat Bay to honor those who gave their lives at sea, conducting graveside ceremonies and marching proudly in local parades.
“It’s what we do and what we believe in—and not just on patriotic holidays,” Marshall said.
In Alabama, Mike Craig, commander, Post 5180, Seale, Ala., didn’t let their small Post size deter their efforts.
“We pulled the community together to place more than 7,000 VFW “Buddy®” Poppies on graves at the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Our Post also rallied 200 volunteers and other nearby VFW Posts, even in the rain, to line the cemetery roads with flags.”
Craig said he believes the effort will grow next year.
“Seeing the massive turnout of volunteers was one of the most proud and humbling moments of my life,” he said. “It goes to show that you don’t have to be big to do big things.”
Listen to “Outstanding Post” commander Mike Craig share how his small Post is doing big things on VFW TalkRadio, The National Defense.
