New Jersey Job Fair Helps Troops Find Work

Veterans, both old and new, found Toms River, N.J. the place to be on Sept. 18. The reason? A job fair specifically for them.

The VFW helps host the event every two years as a way to bring the business world and veterans together.

More than 650 veterans came out to the National Guard armory to meet with local employers, as well as work on ways to strengthen their resumés.

“A lot of vets don’t realize employers look to hire veterans first because of their skills, ideas and attitudes,” said Don Marshall, VFW Post 9503 Quartermaster and former New Jersey state commander.

“We had many vet-friendly organizations present.”

Employers present at the fair included representatives from over 60 public and private organizations.

Post 9503 and Post 10065 worked with all the posts in District 12 to bring employers and veterans together, as well as the New Jersey Department of Labor. VFW service officers were also present to help anyone who needed to file a claim or had questions. Representatives from the VA were also ready to assist.

The day was a success as all veterans in attendance were put in contact with prospective employers.

“It can be tough finding work, and it can be tough finding good workers,” said Marshall. “This fair acts as a mediator in bringing hard-working vets to America’s workforce.”
