Rain Didn’t Dampen Troops’ Fun at Lowe’s Motor Speedway

A wet Memorial Day weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway didn’t hinder the VFW-hosted hospitality event.

Troops from Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg and Fort Jackson attended the hospitality event at the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300. After tours of the pits, VFW Commander-in-Chief Glen Gardner greeted the troops and gave out door prizes before they headed to the grandstand to watch the 300-mile race.

Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) team displayed the Veterans of Foreign Wars racing colors as Harvick looked for his first Nationwide Series win at the track. Starting the race from the eighth position, Harvick struggled with the handling of the car most of the night and finished the rain-shortened event in the 23rd position.

A family assisted by the VFW Unmet Needs program also attended the event, staying overnight in an RV, courtesy of Camping World.

“Camping World’s generosity has been so great the past two seasons we’ve partnered with them. They provide an RV for race weekends whenever they can, so a VFW Unmet Needs family can enjoy the weekend in a fully stocked RV. The families are so appreciative of this once in a lifetime experience,” said Michael Penney, Director, VFW National Military Services.

Here is the upcoming 2009 VFW Racing Schedule:
Camping World Truck Series—Driver: Ron Hornaday
July 24—Indianapolis
October 24—Martinsville
November 6—Texas
November 13—Phoenix
